I found an article on the subject of beauty titled Beauty is objective and subjective, written by Razib Khan on Discover. Khan’s article overviews the societal discussion of beauty and it’s nature. Kahn believes that Western standards of beauty are intensely superficial. “When it comes to physical beauty this framework expresses itself in the assumption that Western standards of beauty are peculiar artificialities, with no grounding in human nature.” (Kahn). Kahn provides a model detailing the “complexities” of beauty as a whole. “The first is just species typicality…The second biological dimension has to do with exaggerated sexual characteristics….Now we move to the environmental dimensions…” Essentially, Kahn describes nature’s standards of beauty as facial and structural symmetry, sexual characteristics, and cultural attributes. With these standards in mind, Kahn was able to accurately detail the necessary characteristics one must posses to be considered beautiful. I love the way that the article you found relates to the idea of form and sense from the other article with the three standards. I think that if you embed the quotes from the article into your argument in your essay it will be really good! I also think it is a great idea to use an opposing standpoint as one of the evidences with John’s podcast, it’s a perfect opportunity for a naysayer. Overall, I think that you have a great start for your essay with the evidence that you are going to use.
